2009 Fall Bears of Katmai Alaska Trip Report

Another in a long line of fun photo shoots with the Brown Bears of Katmai NP in Alaska. This photo shoot took place from September 10-16, 2009 with Chuck Keim of Coastal Outfitters. Our group of 8 photographers met on Kodiak Island and float planed out to the boat (about an hour trip). This time round the weather was not always the best and it took me three tries just to get to Kodiak. Most days were overcast with modest amounts of rain, nothing bad enough to keep us out of the weather.

We concentrated on bears fishing for salmon in the streams. I'm especially pleased with the number of action shots and wide angle images we were able to take. Although the bulk of my images were taken with the 500mm lens. We had good opportunities with salmon fishing, sleeping, nursing, big scar-faced boars, and mothers with young cubs.

Other wildlife species we photographed included a first for me on Katmai, a wolverine (our first morning out), Stellar Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and Harbor Seals.

As always food was great on the boat.

This is a trip I lead often. It is a favorite with wildlife photographers and is often full a year in advance so please plan accordingly.
