2010 Fall Bears of Katmai Alaska Trip Report

Another in a long line of fun photo shoots with the Brown Bears of Katmai NP in Alaska. This photo shoot took place from August 12-22, 2010 with Chuck Keim of Coastal Outfitters. Chuck reminded me on this trip that I have been bringing groups to him now for 14 years. No wonder it seems like I have lots of bear images in my files. Our group of 7 photographers met on Kodiak Island and float planed out to the boat (about an hour trip). This time round the weather was fantastic. We had several days of sunny weather…a rarity in Alaska. However before we traveled to Katmai we explored Kodiak. The weather was wet yet we had good luck with moss covered Sitka Spruce.

On Katmai we concentrated on bears fishing for salmon in the streams. I'm especially pleased with the number of action shots and wide angle images we were able to take. At times we had 30 bears in front of us. The bulk of my images were taken with the 500mm lens and 70-200mm. We had good opportunities with bears salmon fishing, sleeping, nursing, big boars, and mothers with young cubs.

Other wildlife species we photographed included Stellar Sea Lions, and Bald Eagles.

As always food was great on the boat.

This is a trip I lead often. It is a favorite with wildlife photographers and is often full a year in advance so please plan accordingly.
