2009 Wild Horses of the Pryor Mountains

During the first two weeks of July 2009 I led several private tours into the Pryor Mountains of Montana/Wyoming after wild horses in wild flowers. This summer the wild flowers were spectacular as were the mustangs. It was not uncommon to see 70 horses together in this high elevation mountain habitat. At more than 8,000+ feet there were still areas with snow that the horses used for water and getting away from annoying insects.

Most roads in the area are 4x4 only and the rocks are razor sharp. I actually had chunks of rubber coming off my truck tires!

Although I didn't get photos I did see a mountain lion one morning as well as a black bear. Other wildlife included a rattlesnake, cottontail, jackrabbit, mule deer and bighorn sheep. This is a wild remote area.

The scenery around Bighorn Canyon NRA is spectacular with lots of red rock.
